September 25, 2003 Lesser Of Two Evils In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul and his fellow soldiers face negative forces throughout their time on the war front. Yet perhaps their greatest nemesis is not the bullets of the opposing British forces or the disease infested trench lines, their greatest enemies are both people who are supposed to be on “their side.” Both Kantorek and Himmelstoss are characters that impact Paul and his fellow soldiers’ lives in an extremely negative way. Although Kantorek’s actions can at best be described as a miss guided use of patriotism, Himmelstoss’s evils overshadow even the most despicable actions of Kantorek because of his pointless acts of torture.
