The focus of this paper is the production of coffee in Ethiopia and its economic importance. I will provide statistical evidence, steps in coffee production, and a small background in how it makes it to the market.
Coffee is reported on trademark. ... Coffee is also Ethiopia’s largest export commodity. It should come as no surprise then that coffee is a major cash crop in Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, coffee is regarded as a medicine, a food, and a beverage. According to Africa travel magazine, approximately 200,000 to 250,000 tons of coffee is produced in Ethiopia each year, with 35% being consumed locally. Variables affecting the amount of coffee produced include fluctuations in the weather, price, and the seasonal nature of coffee plants (African Travel Magazine). “Coffee accounts for more than 60% of Ethiopia’s export earnings and provides the primary source of income for many thousands of small farmers” (American University).
