I chose to analyse the construction of a segment from the movie “Road to Perdition.” The director, Sam Mendes, directed the movie brilliantly. The composition of the movie was excellently done, with images and music used to substitute dialogue, to convey meanings or communication between two people, where possible. For anyone who has yet to watch this movie, maybe it’s best to stop reading any further, as I’m about to briefly discuss the segment I’m analyzing to be able to make sense of my analysis, and this may ruin it for you. =) The segment I am analyzing is one from one of the last scenes, where Mike Sullivan (Tom Hanks) and his son, Michael, have arrived at a relative’s house after being on the road for 5 or 6 weeks in the year of 1931, trying to get revenge on Mike’s mob boss, John Rooney (Sam Newman) and his son Connor, for the murder of Mike’s wife and youngest son. In this scene, they are ready to start anew, after getting the revenge they were after. Mike is standing inside the house watching Michael through the window playing outside with a dog. They are finally at peace, and this is the first time the audience witnesses a smile on Mike’s face, but this is all about to change as they have no idea that the hitman/photographer (Jude Law) that John Rooney had hired to kill Mike, had survived an earlier accident, and had beaten them to the house, and here Mike is killed.
