"Nearly all of those two and a half million were people just stepping off one plane and stepping onto another," he says. "The only economic impact from that loss might be fewer slices of pizza and Duke and UNC tshirts sold on the airport concourse." In fact, notes Martinez, per-capita air traffic is higher in Raleigh-Durham than anywhere else in the U.S., which creates market opportunities too tempting to resist. "The amount of air service generated here is rery heavy for our population base," he says. "Because of the strong business climate, the universities and the region's generally upscale demographics, most of this traific is composed of sophisticated, highfrequency flyers." This pattern is expected to continue, with local demand for air service predicted to rise 10 percent in 1995.
