The dreaming is a complicated concept, with multiple meanings. In one sense the dreaming refers to a time long ago when the world took the form that is has today. Dreaming…Cont. Some think of it as a flat and featureless plain, surrounded by water and cast into darkness. At a certain point powerful spiritual being emerged, and through their travels gave the world its shape and form. Kinship Aboriginal society is a complex and sophisticated network of relationships, rights and obligations. Everyone is related and all relationships are respected. Kinship is the fabric of aboriginal society. Totems & Births At birth, individuals are given a totem which remains with them until death. A totem defines the rights and duties of the individual and their relationships with others. Birth represents the return of an ancestral spirit from the Dreaming, and for this reason, conception in traditional society was seen in part as reincarnation. Land Aborigines regard land as sacred. Places on earth share in sacredness of the Dreaming as they were formed in their present shape by the journeys of the Ancestor beings.
