The ability of a network to log events plays a vital role in helping the System Administrator be able to diagnose the health of the network. These logs have saved numerous networks due to the information they record. Sadly, most of the event logs are manually scrutinized when the need arises which requires a lot of time and patience, the first of which is always in a short supply for any System Administrator to begin with, but is often the only way to discover the problem at hand. The primary benefit of network logs are that they allow System Administrators to monitor their network on an ongoing basis to ensure that it is running free of intruders. Intruders also recognize the importance of log files and often target them and them because they know that if an experienced System Administrator reads the log they could possible use it to track down the suspect.
