Babbit is the main character that deals with life in a consumer culture. Babbit is a hard-working prosperous man who has a difficult time figuring out his role in society within himself, but hides his uncertainty on the outside. Lewis portrays the role of consumer culture as an addicting and persuading culture in 1920’s America, through this character named Babbit. Lewis shows his true feelings for the role of consumer culture, in the way Babbit struggles through his everyday life. Lewis makes it a point throughout the book to reveal negative aspects of Babbit’s struggling life, in his life at home as a husband and parent, in his life at work as a leader and political-type figure, and in his life within himself. ... This is where all the action will unfold in Babbit’s life and where his roller-coaster life will begin to reveal Lewis’s ill feelings towards this style of culture in America during the 1920’s.
Throughout the book there are many problems that go on in Babbit’s life, but none more visible than the struggle he has at home. Babbit was the type of father that stressed the importance of being all that you can be in this world with both his kids, but he could relate to his son much more. ... So it can really be seen, through his parenting that Babbit is very forward and straight to the point in his family.
Sinclair was very incisive in proving Babbit’s unfulfilled love from family, especially his wife. ... ” Sinclair shows through Babbit’s parenting how the addicting culture of that time period led people to develop certain types of motives and behaviors to fit the mold of society better.
