“Hot Summer Winds” In our movie, “Hot Summer Winds,” which took place in California during 1934, there were two different types of cultures, the Japanese and the Hispanic. In the Japanese culture, the men are the ones who have the power and make decisions in the family, whereas the women are in a lower position and have to obey the men. Outside the family, people show respect to each other by bowing down in front of one another and talking in a polite way. When the Japanese people invite a guest to their house, they show the guest trust and respect. In most Hispanic families, there are three or more children. The men are the breadwinners while the women are the housewives. The story is told by Yoniko, the Japanese daughter, who feels sorry for but proud of her mother. Her father doesn’t give his wife freedom; therefore, they have conflicts in their marriage. In the movie, three main conflicts are emphasized, but the wife gets along with them.
