"Nature versus nurture" sums up in a nutshell one of the most contentious debates in science: Are people's qualities determined by their genes (nature) or by their environment (nurture)? Nature --- Innate behaviour. This is the behaviour that has been evolved over many generations, under the influence of natural selection. The behaviour is adapted to the animal's way of life and is shown by all members of the species. Nurture --- Learned behaviour. The individual animal throughout its life learns this type of behaviour. The answer, of course, is "both." Nature and nurture work together to shape experience. By studying identical twins raised apart (who theoretically may have only their genes in common) and comparing them with identical twins raised together, fraternal twins raised together, and fraternal twins raised apart, Bouchard says he has been able to statistically tease apart the influences of environment and heredity.
