Ars Nova today
My article critique is based on an article written by David Fallows about Ars Nova in music. ... Fallows, like me, believes that Ars Nova, which literally means “new art”, was a “major turning-point in the history of music notation.” Ars Nova was also a movement, or a system, created to put down the old system, the Ars Antiqua, which means “old art.” The problem is that many other musicians and theorists believe musical notation came at this point through a development and by the “treatise” Ars Nova, written by French composer and musical theorist Philippe de Vitry, we know in the 14th century the rhythmic notation was the same as ours today. ... Fallows and I will defend his theory about Ars Nova. ... This word, rhythm, appeared in music in the 13th century, with the Ars Antiqua but all the others things like pitch, duration and meter were all related to rhythm because in the 13th century the word rhythm had all these meanings.
