What is Type 1 Diabetes? Type 1 diabetes is insulin-dependent diabetes or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) which can affect males and females of all ages. This type of diabetes is caused because the insulin producing cells in the pancreas are unable to produce enough insulin; therefore the level of glucagon rises in the blood sugar level, which in turn, causes high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). When hyperglycemia occurs, glucose leaves the body through urine, which may lead to dehydration that causes blurry vision and dry skin. Hyperglycemia may also be harmful to nerves and obstruct white blood cells, extending the period in which the body heals. Sometimes, a person may believe they are hungry because their cells do not receive the sufficient amount of glucose that they require. Eventually, the cells need for energy results in the breaking down of fat cells, causing weight loss.
