Calvin Calvin is the husband of Beth and father of Conrad. He loves both his wife and son very much and wants to please both of them but is stuck in the middle. When his wife complains that Conrad isn’t dressing nicely, he tries to defend his son who just got out of the hospital and is obviously struggling with a lot of things besides clothes. He says, “That’s the style. Decency is out, chaos is in-” but then, “Okay, I’ll talk to him.” When he does talk to Conrad, he doesn’t even bring up the topic of clothes. Chapter 2 Identity 1: Cal bases his own identity on what he thinks an ideal father should be, but having grown up in an orphanage, he doesn't have any such model, so he constantly questions whether what he thinks is ideal is truly right. It is mostly based on what he did not have growing up, what he missed.
