Lieutenant Frederic Henry, in “A Farewell to Arms”, is a young American ambulance driver in the Italian Army during WWI. Henry is not only the narrator, but also the protagonist of this novel. Henry shows that he is very courageous in battle. He meets his duties with quiet stoicism. He lacks any real passion, and his selfish motivations undermine all sense of glory and heroism. Lieutenant Henry shows great courage in battle. He doesn’t sit around and wait for something to happen; he takes action. When he sees a troop dragging behind the rest of the men, he grabs him, examines him, and realizes the man has a hernia and sends him to a hospital.
