In other days a friend of mine, who claims to be a vegetarian, came to have a dinner with me. It once had been a meek calf, she said, while I was chewing a piece of juicy beef with great joy. Struck and stopped for a moment, I quickly took it as a joke. However, she continued to remind me that whatever I¡¯m eating was once a vivid, lively creature, with a calm but critical tone. Finally I was so uncomfortable at the words that felt like vomiting. But the sense of guilt went with the wind the next day. I¡¯m not a vegetarian after all, and most of us not. Are all those who eat animal meat criminals?
