The story is set in the United States. I would say that it takes place around the time when the short story was published (1980), but it could as well have been set now. The reason why I am to believe so is that Jackie and Roger were separated, and that Jackie and Ellen are lesbians, which I do not consider to be “normal” earlier than 1980. In fact if it had not said published in 1980 I would have thought it to be later. Roger belongs to what I would define as the upper part of the middle-class, and also Ellen. Roger being rich, or at least wanting to be, Ellen writing a cookbook, and being editor of a food section in a magazine, she also say: “she had been able to make their living better before Jackie passed away.” This for me is the same as saying that she earned some or much money. Regarding to Ellen’s relationship to Jackie, I read the text as if they are lesbians. The reason why I think so is that neither Jackie nor Roger was ready to admit that they were separated, and therefore they did not divorce.
