October 31, 1995, half way through the seventh grade, the anticipation was growing as the end of the school day neared. It was Halloween night and my first trip to Halloween Horror Nights with my best friend and her family. It was a day I will never forget. Horrified screams and calls for help, usually in good fun, turned into reality, as my own life was in jeopardy. It was supposed to be the best day of my life as a seventh grader, but it turned into a terrifying, heart stopping experience as I watched my friends mother slip out of consciousness and pass on to another world. It was overcast in the late afternoon in October. The smell of a recent rain filled the air as the sun pierced the sky between the clouds. My friends and I began to gather in the front yard of Kristin’s house. We prepared for a great night out. Kristen and her sister were allowed to bring one friend each, and I was one of the privileged. On our journey to Universal Studios, we stopped to get a bite to eat at Chili’s. Over dinner, we all discussed how we anticipated the night would go, where we would go first and who would get scared the most. During dinner, Kristen was talking to her mom, Diane, about ordering a glass of wine. I could see by the expressions on their faces that the conversation was intense though, I could not hear what was being said. I thought to my self, “What’s the big deal?” It’s not unusual for adults to have a drink with their meal. The conversation ended, and we all ate our meals. We made our way to the van, to continue our adventure. We hit the road and the time seemed to pass very slowly. Finally, our destination was in sight. As we pulled into the parking lot, I was amazed at the number of cars and people. My heart began to race, as I could not wait to get into the park. An excited nervousness came over me.
