Barn Burning

Question #8- Explain how the description of Major de Spain’s house helps to frame the main conflicts that Sarty experiences in his efforts to remain loyal to his father. Sarty experiences a moral dilemma between two ideals which circumstance has forced to be in conflict with one another. First there is the element of blood, the ties of kinship which have an inherent pull on him to act as they should direct, regardless of right and wrong. In this story the other force is the element of free will, which will inevitably manifest in one way or another when kept suppressed beneath the surface for so long. The mansion of Major de Spain represents a calling to Sarty’s free will, and the peace which he feels is represents is in contrast to the destructive, lawless lifestyle he has been forced to embrace due to the ties of kin. “ [...]; the terror and grief; being pulled two ways like between two teams of horses [...]” (443). He is constantly uneasy about the way his father behaves, yet believes it is almost his duty to stand by him and protect his actions, simply because he must at all costs prove himself to be loyal to his blood.
