Pencey Characters Holden Caulfield is a 17 years old Junior at Pencey Preparation School in Pennsylvania. Trough the story Holden tells the reader about his way leaving school and ending drunken in New York around Christmas time. The story ends in a park where Phoebe, Holden’s little sister, is riding a carousel and this view touches him so much that from that day he changes his life. On his way there Holden goes trough a lot of trouble, he is dismissed from school and doesn’t want his parents to know about. So he rides to New York by the train and goes around in New York without any goal spending money in bars and sleeping in cheap hotel rooms. I want to have a closer look at the Pencey characters, because I think the play an important role in the beginning of the story and affecting Holden in a way, that makes him think of everybody being successful as being phony. 1. Robert Ackley Robert Ackley is a senior at Pencey Prep and Holden’s room neighbor. He is a very tall guy about 6’4” and round-shouldered he also weights about twice as much as Holden does.
