From our discussions with the three unions (NUTESA, SAPTU, NTESU) and various forms of input received so far, the AA Executive provisionally notes some of the following legal and social advantages and disadvantages of unionising.
Some legal and social advantages of unionising:
The flexibility exists for becoming a "professional union" (representing academic staff only, or open to all university staff) that positively promotes productivity, communication, co-operation, and harmonious labour relations on the one hand, while avoiding the more negative connotation of "trade unionism", e. ...
Some legal and social disadvantages of unionising:
The loss of members who continue to perceive unions as simply "old-styled" militant organisations.
