A close reading of A.E Housman ‘s Eight O’clock Eight o’clock appears to be attempting to convey a message of struggle, struggle between time, fate and religion and what these all mean to a man. through very clever use of diction as well as imagery A.E. Housman imparts a very interesting if somewhat muddled message. The juxtaposition between the positive, optimistic first stanza and the negative, pessimistic second stanza impresses well upon the reader a sense of time. The predominant image of the steeple works well as an image of authority handing down time, representative of the church as well as the passing of time. The first stanza of Eight O’Clock imparts a very happy, optimistic mood. Housman uses decidedly modern words such as sprinkle and toss to create a very light and positive feeling.
