Backward Design Unit Plan Template Stage 1 - Desired Results Content Standard (s)/Overarching Performance Goals
The overall performance goal is for each student to demonstrate a working knowledge of maps. This is to be accomplished by successfully navigating an area map of Yellowstone National Park specifically a hiking trail. Students will be paired up with a partner. Each pair will have five hours to complete the task. Each student will be equipped with water canteen, compass, first aid kit, waterproof map, flash light and a two way radio. Understanding(s) Students will understand that... How to read a compass and map Know where North, South, East and West are located be able to identify the relative locations and/or provide directions. That there ways to determine direction on a given path without the use of a compass or map. o Position of the sun, moon or stars. o Moss growing on North side of tree. o Selecting a fixed point and shooting a back azimuth. That they can read and locate positions on a grid map. Essential Question(s)
