In September of 1996, the lives of the Afghan women had been shattered in a human rights catastrophe. Their freedom had been cruelly stripped from them. This was the time when an extremist militia group, known as the Taliban seized control of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. This group consisting of young men and boys, created a system of gender apartheid, which basically put women into a state of house arrest. The Taliban created an edict that forbade women and girls from going to school, working and generally being in public areas. Many laws forbidding enhancements of looks or distractions of any kind were created. Any woman, who dared to defy this law, was beaten and forced home. Since taking control, this hypocritical group of men has made many more edicts in Afghanistan. The suffering of Afghan women should be stopped. Before the Taliban had taken over Afghanistan, women had become very successful. They were 70% of schoolteachers, 40% of doctors, 50% of government workers and 50% of university students. Now, male relatives must accompany them in order to leave their homes. All women are obligated to wear a “burqa”.
