Les Miserables is a wonderful piece of literature written by Victor Hugo and published in 1862. In this book Jean Valjean goes through four temptations. These temptations affect Jean Valjean’s life and the lives of other people. These temptations occur after a life changing experience in Digne with a Bishop. Jean Valjean had the opportunity to ruin another person’s life and improve his but because of the encounter with the Bishop in Digne he always put others before himself. Jean Valjean’s first temptation was when he was given a room and a meal at the Church where the Bishop lives. The Bishop kindly gave him a room and Jean Valjean is faced with his first temptation, to take the Bishop’s silver. Jean Valjean takes the Bishop’s silver and leaves the Church but is caught. When Jean Valjean returns with some guards the Bishop tells Marius “I am glad to see you. But I gave the candlesticks also, which are silver like the rest, and would bring two hundred francs. Why did you not take them along with your plates?” This second chance changed Jean Valjean’s life because from this point on in his life he would always put others before him and act very selfless mainly towards Cosette. He was probably the most selfless towards Cosette because he felt responsible for Fantine when he had her fired and made her become a prostitute, which got her ill and caused her death. He was kind to Cosette because the Bishop of Digne had been kind to him and so he was kind to Fantine, and Fantine asked if he would bring Cosette to him.
