THE ACCOUNTANT WHO WAS A FRIEND OF LEONARDO DA VINCI November 10, 1494 was the day when Fra Luca Pacioli gave to the publisher Paganino Paganini his masterpiece, called “Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionità” and dedicated it to the Duke Guidobaldo from Urbino . But let’s start from the beginning and see how Pacioli became so important for the modern accountancy. He was born in San Sepolcro around 1445, which later gave him the chance to be one of the first writers to take advantage of a new tool designed by Johann Gutenberg and his colleagues: the printing press. He also has been one of the first to use that tool to insert in his book “De Divina Proportione”, was 1497, not only showed words but also drawings and sketches. As a student, he had the chance to study in the “scuole d’abaco ” as we found evidence from a paper of a merchant. Also, in that period in Europe, the scuole d’abaco was particularly popular as each center of commerce needed people to be as fast as possible in calculus for their businesses. From this moment, a new mathematics was born which was used only in business relationships. Probably, Luca has been particularly good in this subject and therefore has been hired by a rich merchant based in Venice, called Rompiasi. Portrait of Fra Luca Pacioli with a student (1495) One of the reasons why Pacioli decided to go to Venice was that he had the chance to attend the “scuola di Rialto”, a famous school in Venice, where Domenico Bragadin was teaching logic.
