“Darkness”
A Critical Analysis of Lord Byron’s Literary Work
Have you ever sat down to take the time and imagine what it will be like the day all life on earth ends? In the dreadful but creative poem, “Darkness,” Lord Byron does just that. ... It’s almost as if one has a better understanding of human nature once he or she can understand this work. ...
From this moment on, darkness and fear rule the earth. ... ) Selfishness takes over all the hearts of mankind just as darkness takes over all the light on earth: “…and all hearts/ Were chilled into a selfish prayer for light (line 9). ... Darkness is the dramatic change that causes mankind to destroy himself. ... It wasn’t darkness that did the dirty work here. Darkness only came about and proposed a threat to life on earth because it was different. If earth had always been in darkness and one day light appeared, would mankind have reacted in the same way? ... Darkness was not light, it was not what had always been, and therefore it was not accepted. When people read this poem they think that the darkness is this big, bad entity that is causing death and corruption on earth. However, darkness represents nothing but the mere element of change. ...
Byron also begins to use the strong imagery of light and darkness (or hot and cold) in relating it to chaos and fear versus peace and happiness. ... The earth is now completely taken over by darkness. ...
The intense descriptions Byron uses at the end of the poem to tell us about the earth, paint yet another picture, a picture of absolute darkness. ... ” These entities were no longer of any use, because Darkness now ruled over it all. ... ” One thing I find to be interesting, is that Byron refers to the Darkness as a “She. ... He is basically saying that women, being Darkness, has destroyed man. ... However, as I discussed earlier, it was not the Darkness, (woman,) who destroyed man, it was he who destroyed himself.
