Since my parent’s education was very limited they did not know how to help their own children. No expectations were set for their children. There was no one to encourage or motivate them. They were not informed about the issues going on in school, and never participated in school activities. At that time there was a migrant worker who would make home visits and translate for them when needed. My brothers and sisters were not successful and dropped out of school at a young age. The boys worked, and the girls got married. My education experience was not as tough as theirs. I had help from them. When I stated kindergarten, I cried a lot. Going to school was difficult for me, staying home with my mom is what I was used to. My teacher did speak Spanish and I did not feel out of place. I managed to survive my first year in school and even learned a new language, which was English. I figured school was not a place after all. Everything was falling in place until I got to first grade. What an experience! The teacher was very, very mean. She had no patients with any of the students. All of the students were ridiculed because we could not keep up with the work. She would throw erasers at us.
