Joining the Eastern and Western Concepts: The Frame work for Jinnah:
The emphasise in the democratic concepts of leadership is on the leader’s own character, abilities and his success in improving the conditions of the followers. ... The question arises, is the western analysis of leadership applicable to the Indian conditions and vice versa? ... Therefore ‘Bs’ cannot make the right decisions for themselves and authoritarian leadership style is the right kind of system for the South Asia. But if it could be shown that the same kind of problems, namely uncertainty and lack of understanding of the issues, face ‘As’, the western followers, then the two models of leadership would become equally effective or otherwise for both the societies. ... The above argument is very similar that is used to distinguish the leadership requirements for ‘A’s and ‘B’s. ... A similar theory exists in the Islamic leadership model; “Just monarchs exact not more than is necessary to affect their purpose, and stain not their hands with avarice,” because it would induce a cause for rebellion (Brown, 1969: 8). ...
Leaders should legitimise their leadership status. ... However, in the elections of 1946, the Muslim league under the leadership of Jinnah won ninety per cent of the Muslim seats (Wolpert, 1984: 256-257). ...
Conclusion:
The modern analytical tools for the evaluation of the leaders are very much in line with the traditional leadership models provided by Islamic and Hindu tradition. ... Leadership has a similar function in both Eastern and Western cultures, that is to understand and provide the solutions to the problems that the followers face. The success or failure of leadership can only be judged in retrospect therefore it is essential that the leadership possess the highest level of skill.
