LIBERAL DEMOCRACY AND AN INFORMED CITIZENRY
Liberal Democracy today would be more meaningful if we have a well-informed citizenry. Informed in a way that they are able to grasp the full context of their rights and responsibilities as members of al liberal democratic state and aware of the issues that confront them. I believe that an informed citizenry is necessary for liberal democracy to be more meaningful and for it to work for the benefit of all. ... what is liberal democracy? ... what is the main source of contentions in the principles of liberal democracy? ... how can a more informed citizenry allow liberal democracy to be more meaningful?
Liberal Democracy took its form in the American Declaration of Independence, and had its roots in the Philosophy of John Locke. The American declaration of independence was the first and clearest application of the principles of democracy, and extended it into liberal democracy. ... It may be argued that liberal democracy has its roots even way before the American declaration of independence to the time of Plato. This argument is not entirely correct because although Plato thought of democracy, he was actually against it. Second, although Plato thought of democracy, the democracy that he thought of was not liberal democracy. ... 1993, 230) It was John Locke’s philosophy of liberalism which allowed for liberal democracy to be conceived. ... 1996, 219) It was from this principle that liberal democracy came into being. ... Locke envisioned Liberal democracy, while the American declaration of Independence applied it. But after Locke and the declaration of independence, Liberal Democracy evolved. Today liberal democracy has become more complex. Liberal democracy today has not included principles such as sovereignty, and rule of the majority. ...
Today, because of these evolutions in the principles of liberal democracy, contentions have arisen causing confusion.
