After the Great War, the Treaty of Versailles was completely unfair towards the Germans. Germany had no say in any of the talks, had to take all the blame and costs for the war and were humiliated and mistreated in the process. The German people were also already upset as they thought the left-wing politicians had ‘stabbed them in the back’ by ending the war and making peace.
Germany thought the Treaty of Versailles was unfair because it was a ‘diktat’. A ‘diktat’ is a peace dictated or forced upon the losers – not a treaty negotiated between two equal sides. In this case the loser is Germany and the winners are the ‘Big Three’; USA, France and Britain. The leaders of the ‘Big Three’, Wilson, Clemenceau and George, formulated the terms of the treaty and dictated them to Germany, not letting Germany participate in any of the discussions. Germany had only 15 days to respond to the terms of the Treaty but had no choice but to sign with the state they were in.
