Reagan and Clinton
An Analysis of Leadership
Introduction
The Presidency was created by the constitution, but it’s up to the individual who occupies the office to guide the office and define its true boundaries. It could be easily argued that both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were both successful presidents, but it is this paper’s thesis that Ronald Reagan outperformed Bill Clinton in at least one aspect; that being leadership. ... This paper will explore the leadership styles of both these former Presidents and examine the leadership characteristics that served Reagan so well and Clinton so poorly.
Leadership and Ronald Reagan
For those Americans old enough to recall the 1970s, they’ll remember it as a time of crisis: economic crisis, national security crisis, and a crisis in the terms of the United States’ position in the world. ... These were the conditions that Ronald Reagan inherited when he became president on the 20th of January, 1981.
Ingredients to Success
Conviction and Sincerity
Ronald Reagan will forever be remembered in the annals of history for his strong convictions and his dedication to his four pillars of freedom: Individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy, and national pride , Reagan believed firmly that he represented the aspirations of the American people, and realized that that leadership meant challenging the prevailing political culture. As the governor who stood up to student radicals, as the candidate who challenged President Ford for the Republican nomination, as the president who deployed missiles in Europe, sent troops to Grenada, and described the Soviet Union as the “Evil Empire”, he was often condemned and derided by Liberals, the media and even the Republican establishment, Reagan however never underestimated what might be possible through strong leadership. Reagan truly believed in these things. ... Americans are wise where it counts; they have an instinct for recognizing integrity, and “given a clear choice between an honest man and a flimflam artist, they’ll opt for the man with principles”
Vision
Ronald Reagan knew the kind of America he was working for. ... ” Indeed, one of Reagan’s strengths was his ability to remain in “visionary mode”. ... Reagan appealed to those “who could see beyond the front row” .
