TCP/IP—the Internet protocol suite
Concepts > The Internet protocol suite, commonly called TCP/IP, is the most popular set of
protocols for data communication in use today. This section introduces you to the
Internet protocol suite and to the immense internetwork, called the Internet, for
which it was originally developed.
The history of TCP/IP and the Internet
In 1969 the Department of Defense began to develop a network designed for
sharing its research information with other government agencies, universities,
and other research institutions. This network grew and became the basis for
what we know today as the Internet. The Department of Defense had its own
protocol developed to facilitate global communication. Although the United
States government has supported the development of OSI protocols at an
international level and has representatives on the ISO Committees, it has also
gone off in its own direction in the development and widespread deployment of
the Internet protocol suite(also known as TCP/IP). ... As people from around the world began to discover and explore the
Internet, TCP/IP became its protocol.
