As Hester holds Arthur in her arms on the scaffold before he died, she asks him,
“Shall we not meet again?…Shall we not spend our immortal life together? ... When
Hester says this, she wants to express the love and passion she kept inside for so
long to Arthur, giving the dynamics of love another chance (Leverenz 422). ... However at the scene when they are all on the scaffold in
front of the people, Pearl changes from resembling The Scarlet Letter to their very
daughter. As she gives Arthur a kiss on his lips, she accepts him as her father and
shows that she would grow up to live a life with sorrow and joy becoming a human
being than the resemblance of The Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne 238). In The Scarlet
Letter, Dimmesdale helps Hester hold custody of Pearl when they were at Governor
Bellingham’s manor (Hawthorne 113-116). ... This also shows that Arthur still remembered their past love and
relationship despite the presence of his associates and his reputation.
