Jude and her mother have always had a very close relationship since her father passed away. Cynthia would tell her admiring daughter all about her crusading father who lived to help the poor and Jude would listen with wide eyes imagining her brave father. Through her mother Jude could remember her father, because of him Jude decided to become a missionary doctor and go to Chile to carry on her fathers work. Jude sees herself as very independent, she does not need to rely on anyone for anything. ... Yet Jude can never really get on with her life until she has let her father go.
When she leaves to go to Melbourne to study medicine Jude leaves her mother and embraces her freedom. Jude soon becomes obsessed with the past, she becomes involved in activities with people who knew her father and stalks the man who tortured him. When her mother confesses that she gave her father and everybody she knew away to the Chilean government in order to save Jude, Jude is crushed. ... Jude knows what a big sacrifice her mother made but something inside her prevents her from reaching out to the woman that let her live. ... Towards the end Jude realises he shouldnt dwell on the past, but should be thankful that she is alive today, to live in the future.
