Taking the role of a social critic to Singapore and her people, the poem, Void deck by Alfian Bin Saat, succeed in providing me, an insight on the life in Singapore. Setting aside of the primary meaning of the poem that features the lack of sense of community, kiasuism, and inconsiderateness in Singaporeans, I decide to decipher the secondary meaning, which will reveal Singapore as a politically repressive nation. In this essay, I will illustrate on how the poem tastefully reflects the life in Singapore by touching on the government’s autocratic methods that leads to the current politically repressive society.
The distinctive feature of the poem that draws me to adopt the political stance lies in its wide use of transparent margins between two bodies.
