On Being American I was driving back to school, back from my hometown of Sheridan, Arkansas. I was on a freeway, it five o’clock traffic and chaos. The car in front of me is covered in patriotic bumper stickers with sayings like “Proud to be an American,” and “FREEDOM.” Freedom. The people in the car in front of me obviously appreciate it, but do I? I look at the lady driving the black Mercedes next to me. Traffic is at a stand still; we both have our cars in park. She is dressed in a business suit, her hair pulled back. All in all she looks quite professional. She fiddles through some papers, and they look incredibly important. I wonder where she coming from. She probably spent a long time in college, like I probably will. What if she and I were born somewhere like Afghanistan? I certainly would not be on my way to a university. Women and girls were not allowed to attend universities and almost all schools under the Taliban in Afghansistan (“Human Rights Watch”).
