Chapter 5 Character Analysis Essay Steinbeck uses chapter 5 to make the reader feel lonely for certain characters using symbolism and dialogue. There are four characters in particular that I noticed, the first and most obvious being Lennie. You are supposed to feel sorry for Lennie because he killed the puppy and is fretting over whether or not George is going to let him tend the rabbits. We all know if Lennie doesn’t get to tend the rabbits when they get to their imaginary farm the world is going to end, so this is a very big deal. While I was reading I found myself feeling sorry not for the poor, innocent puppy that Lennie bludgeoned to death with his gorilla hand, but Lennie because he is so worried about what George is going to think and say when he finds out. What made me sympathize with him even more was picturing him fumbling around aimlessly in his attempt to hide his misdeed, an attempt that wouldn’t fool a retarded turtle.
