Youth work should be about education, not the control or coercion of young people to accept the social and political status quo (Young, 1998). Youth work should be educative and developmental rather than seek the subordination of young people, Kerry Young argues. Relationships should be the backbone of youth work practice and the motive should not be because young people are in trouble or cause trouble, rather that young people are going through the process of creating themselves (Young, 1998). ... Youth work seeks to develop personal and social education in young people and achieving a greater sense and understanding of self and place in society is a mutual process.
Youth work should be held up for what it is and what it does, argues Young (1998). Its value should not be underestimated or undersold – words of encouragement in an environment where the worth and validity of youth work is continually scrutinised.
