The appearance of the old man with enormous wings explains the irregular occurrences of the past three days. In the person of the old man, we encounter a mysterious creature later identified as an angel. ... Universally, many people, if not all, think of angels as creatures from heaven who come dressed in sparkling white apparel, with big spotless white wings. ... The man with enormous wings, though identified as an angel, did not fit our conception of angels. ... There were only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth …. His huge buzzard wings dirty and half plucked, were forever entangled in the mud”(133). Here the narrator paints a picture of a helpless creature whose fate is with mortal man. The backside of his wings were described as “strewn with parasites”(134).
While man is always at the mercy of angels, we see a reversed role in this narrative where an angel is at man’s mercy, and depends on man for protection.
