Canto XXXIII
-The Inability to Give and Return Love-
In Canto XXXII-XXXIII, those who are treacherous to their kin, country and hosts are punished by having their entire body submerged into a lake of ice. At the end of Canto XXXII Dante sees two souls put into one hole in the great ice lake, one feeding on the others neck and skull. In Canto XXXIII Dante approaches the two souls and asks what brought them together to this place. ... Moving from Antenora, the first round where the heads of the sinners (those treacherous to country) were free above the frigid ice, Dante went to Ptolema, where only half the faces of the sinners (those treacherous to guests and hosts) could be seen, the rest buried in the unforgiving ice of Hell. In Ptolema Dante saw the tears of the souls freeze before they could leave their salty eyes, creating a frozen, crystal film over their frozen eyes.
