PAGE 1 This paper includes information about the five best and five worst countries. It includes statistics to show where the country stands among the rest of the countries in the world and it also includes characteristics that support the reasoning of the five best and five worst countries that were selected. The criteria that is included in this research paper is five characteristics of the five best and five worst countries in the world. The characteristic that has the most utmost importance is education. Educations statistic is calculated by the average years attended in school in males, females and the average of both. Illiteracy is another characteristic that also is important, due to the link it has with education. This is calculated by a percentage of males and females that is illiterate in the population of the country. The next characteristic that was selected was the infant mortality rate per 1,000 live births. The fourth characteristic for this paper is life expectancy at birth. Which is measured by years in males, females and an average of both. Population below poverty line is the final characteristic that was chosen for this paper. This statistic is calculated as a percentage of total population below poverty line. These characteristics were selected because of their importance to each country. The five countries that were researched and found to be to be the worst were Burkina Faso, Burundi, Chad, Mali and Niger. One of the worst countries was Chad. Chad’s education is only given in a total of 3.9 years attended. In Chad, only one-half of the children actually attend school. The illiteracy rate in Chad is 48.4% in men and 66.0% in women. Illiteracy can be associated to education with the fact that without education there aren’t any ways for the people to learn to read or write. Since education is low in Chad, the illiteracy rate is high. In Chad, the infant mortality rate per 1,000 live births is 93.46 deaths. In association with this, PAGE 2 there are only 1.5 doctors to every 100,000 people. With that, the infant mortality rate is really high. The average life expectancy in Chad is 51.27 years total, 49.22 years for males and 53.4 years for females. A system of payment for treatment and medicine has resulted in a higher standard of health, but it means that the very poor no longer have access to medical services. Chad’s population below poverty line is the worst among the five worst countries, which is an average of 80% of the total population, which is very high for a country. This characteristic links with about all of the other characteristics, because if the people are poor they aren’t able to afford health care or even education, and without that the life expectancy would be low and also the illiteracy rate would be high. Mali’s education is the worst in the world at 1.8 years total, 2.4 years for males and 1.3 years for females. The amount of schooling in Mali is limited. There are only schools in the urban areas. Therefore, the schools aren’t accessible for the people who live in the rural areas. According to the population below poverty line, most of the population lives in the rural areas. In Mali, the illiteracy rate is 51.5% in males and 65.6% in females. Also because of the limited schooling is the cause for the high illiteracy rate. As with anything, without education reading and writing isn’t taught. The infant mortality rate per 1,000 live births, in Mali, is 119.63 deaths. This is due to the lack of medical facilities in the rural areas. There is also a lack of nutrition for children, which cause so many of the deaths. The life expectancy in Mali at birth is 47.39 years total, 46.18 year for males and 48.64 for females. This is also due to the lack of hospital facilities. There are also no services for elderly people. The elderly people are on their own, other than family members who are raised to believe that the elder is their responsibility. The population below poverty line, in Mali, is an average of 64% of the total population.
