DDIE MABO (1936 – 1992)
Eddie Mabo was an aboriginal and is one of today’s most inspiring, historical and admirable people. Most Aussie’s remember the word Mabo as a legal term, the name which came from a case involving aboriginal land rights. ... Mabo was born in 1936 and grew up on an Island called Murray Island in the Torres Straight. Mabo’s mother died shortly after she gave birth to him so Mabo grew up with no mother and not knowing what it would be like to have a mother. He grew up with his uncle Benny Mabo and Aunt Maiga and was surrounded by poverty and human degradation. At age 17 Mabo had already gotten himself into trouble with the Island council which he was then later exiled as punishment for a little teenage prank.
