Ralph Ellisons short story Battle Royal describes the intensity of the
separation of the races, (Black and whites). In the story Ellison characterizes
the whites and the blacks as animals. The story demonstrates the system that the
whites treated the blacks, with disrespect and thinking that they had greater
power than they did. Ellison set forth the exact way that the whites and the
blacks had been characterized and should have looked at, like animals and
nothing more. ... Ralph Ellison uses animal imageries to show the
dehumanization of the whites and the blacks because of the disunity against and
within them.
In the story the animals that Ellison used, powerless, and small described the
blacks. The narrator of the story talking about himself states how my skin
turned to goose flesh, this happened at the point of the story where the nude
dancer came and danced, the young black men were forced to look at the her and
if they did they were punished. The narrator describes himself as a goose- a
scared and helpless animal- stating that he became very afraid of the way the
whites forced his classmates and him to do something that they would get bitten
weather they did it or not. ...
Ellison gave characterized the blacks as coons and hypersensitive snails. By
Ellison saying coon he simply meant raccoons. ... This simply
shows that Ellison described blacks as raccoons because its appearance. ... Basically the whites saw the blacks as raccoons, a
powerless and weak animal. ... A horse, an enormous animal easily become infuriated by a mass
number of flies stinging it.
