Can you believe that the total number of fatal firearm accidents in the United States is at an all-time low? Then, why do some people think the freedom to keep and bear arms in the U.S. should be taken away? Back in 1789, Congress passed the Second Amendment to the Constitution which reads, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not by infringed.” This right should not be taken away for the following reasons: our founding fathers have suggested that this freedom should be kept forever, more people are killed by other accidents not related to firearms, and the number of fatal firearm accidents is at an all-time low. Our founding fathers said this freedom should never be taken away for several reasons. Thomas Jefferson stated one reason by saying, “No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.” Samuel Adams, another revolutionary thinker, said, “The Constitution shall never be construed to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms…” Two more important people in our history who supported the liberty to keep and bear arms were Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.
