LPNs are:
health care providers who are responsible for the sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled.
Under physicians and registered nurses orders LPNs:
dress wounds and apply bandages
take vital signs which include temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rate
give medications and injections under doctors orders
observe patients and report any changes
assemble and use equipment such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes and oxygen supplies
record food and fluid intake and output
bathe, dress, and feed patients
apply compresses and hot and cold packs
collect samples of blood and urine to be tested for diseases and other illnesses
perform routine laboratory tests
LPNs may work in:
hospitals
smaller clinics
nursing homes
home care facilities
rehabilitation centers
doctors offices
military
An LPNs education and training consists of:
going to a vocational school for 1-2 years
going to clinical (hospital or nursing home)
after you graduate from the vocational school you must pass a final examination
Besides education and training, an LPN needs to be:
you need to be able to give orders
be able to follow orders
be caring and compassionate
have a great deal of patience and self-control
have good communication skills
have good observation skills
have a willingness to learn
be good at decision-making

checking patients oxygen machines to see if they set at the proper oxygen level, do finger sticks, and checking a patients vital signs by reading charts
counting narcotics
