Democracy and Dictatorship Leadership on the Island

Ralph and his attempt at a democratic government created power, order, and authority on the island in William Goldings, Lord of the Flies. During Wold War Two, an airplane carrying many young boys, crash-landed on a secluded island leaving the boys to fend for themselves. Jack, a boy on the island who desires power, turns on Ralph and tempts the other boys to follow him in another tribe of a dictatorship government. ...

According to the Gage Canadian Dictionary page 434, a democratic government is like a democracy, in which everyone is treated as an equal. ... The island at first was a basic type of democracy with the assemblies, voting and the power of the conch. ... ” (Golding; 31 Ch2 Ralph) When Ralph blows the conch he calls for an assembly for all the boys on the island. ... ” (Golding; 201 Ch11 Jack) At the beginning of the novel, democracy and the power of the conch dominated the island. As the story progresses, the common boys lead by their natural instincts to take the easiest and more enjoyable option and the temptation of Jack’s low maintenance, the democracy falls into a dictatorship government.

The Gage Canadian Dictionary, page 434, states that a dictatorship is when one leader has absolute authority over a group and holds the power to set all rules and orders that must be obeyed. Jack’s similarities to one of the most known dictators Adolph Hitler could be interpreted as a remark by Golding on the mass mentality in Germany before and during the events showing Dictatorship in World War 2. ... The willingness of Jack’s tribe to follow Jack’s nonsensical orders brings them to burn down the island in search for Ralph. There was no thought for the future on the island when the boys followed through on this order and resulted in burning all the food and shelter. ... ”(Golding; 220 ch 12 Ralph) Jack gained power on the island through the temptation of the fresh meat. ... Island life developed from living as organized and responsible boys to acting like savages with destructible behavior. Under this dictatorship, the island became a survival of the fittest.
