Our organization is increasingly relying on electronic mail to send time sensitive information from one location to another. Entire presentations can be sent via e-mail to individuals located across the hall or across the world, and printed documents can be prepared on economical color printers, which greatly enhance their impact. The following will examine both the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing e-mail as a communication device.
Electronic Mail has both good and bad features. When comparing e-mail to the telephone and postal mail, we will find some similarities:
Telephone E-Mail Post Services
Speed High Moderate Low
Synchronous Yes No No
Formality Varies Moderate Varies
Cost High Low Moderate
Conferencing Small Groups One Way Only None
Security/Privacy Moderate Low High
The benefits of e-mail in the workplace are easily recognizable. Because e-mail is relatively fast, the delivery of a message can take a few seconds to a day depending on the network transmission and the delay in the recipients reading.
