Your Daddy’s Son – Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, Music by Stephen Flaherty You Daddy’s Son originates from the recent epic musical Ragtime. The musical, written in 19??, centres around New York in 1906 – an era of industrialisation, when prospects for wealth and happiness seem to be boundless. Everything is new and anything is possible. In this piece, Sarah (a young, single mother who is rumoured to be mute), sings a lullaby to her baby son about his famous father, Coalhouse Walker Junior – a ragtime pianist. This mournful piece sees Sarah sing about her relationship with her child’s runaway father. It’s haunting melody embraces a regretful mood with the piece beginning with a sorrowful vocalise. Nearing the end, the piece rises to a heart-wrenching climax that ultimately portrays the anguish and pain in Sarah’s heart. Furthermore, composers Ahren and Flaherty have created a deeply emotional piece, which is unfortunately relatively unknown in the music world.
