Athol Fugard’s play, ‘“Master Harold”… and the boys”, tells the story of the very special relationship that exists between Hally, a white South African boy, and Sam, a black man in his mid-forties. ... Although it seems relatively straight forward, the play is full of symbolism which is used to better illustrate these themes. ... As the play develops, so does the importance of the dancing, and Sam elaborates on its meaning, saying, “There’s no collisions out there, Hally [referring to out on the dance floor]. ... Once again, as he did with the ballroom dancing, Sam is able to truly clarify the symbolism behind it, saying:
“You’re ashamed of so much! ... If you’re not careful…Master Harold… you’re going to be sitting up there by yourself for a long time to come, and there won’t be a kite in the sky. ... It does this by using symbolism such as ballroom dancing, the kite, the bench, etc.
