At the time of the White ‘invasion’ the Aboriginal people were still a primitive race that had no need to evolve to a higher level of living at the time, because of this the White Europeans saw the Aboriginals as being inferior. This led to the exploitation of the Aboriginals who worked as farm hands and as servants in middle class homes. ... The purpose of these reserves was to keep the Aborigines separate from the White Australians and because the Aboriginals were seen as a dying race, the governments wanted to ‘look after’ the Aboriginal people, this was called ‘soothing the dying pillow’. ... If the Aboriginals had not been able to run the cattle farms then the industry would have collapsed. ... During the 1920s the basic wage of the White Australian fallen a considerable amount and because the wage of an Aboriginal was substantially less to start with the living conditions of the Aboriginals continued to deteriorate. In New South Wales and Victoria the Aboriginals on the reserves were being moved off so that the land could be used for farming, this meant that many Aboriginals were forced to move into the White society and be subjected to racial prejudice, discrimination, lack of rights, poor education and health, low wages, exploitation and living in segregated areas. When working on cattle stations and farms the Aboriginals were segregated from the other White Australian Workers. ... Although there were Aboriginals who were willing to go to war for the country that they loved they could not join the AIF, RAAF or the RAN because there was still the idea that the Aboriginals were inferior, although the Aboriginals couldn’t join the AIF straight away there was the Northern Territory Reconnaissance Unit, when the Aboriginals warned Darwin that there were Japanese bombers coming no one at the other end of the radio believed them because it was an Aboriginal talking over the radio.
