America is said to be “the land of the free, home of the brave.” Though the later part of this description is never questioned, the beginning often is. Is America really the land of the free? An immigrant, legal or illegal, would certainly hopes so. When these thousands of immigrants cross American borders hoping for a better life they are often on the end of a losing battle. Not only do they have little rights or opportunities, but they often are targeted by American “natives” as work thieves and economy drainers. In Ted Conover’s Coyotes, published in 1987, Conover writes “that for two hundred years our strength and vigor have been due precisely to the energy and aspiration of immigrants.” This quote defines America and its people’s history as a country founded by immigrants. The country of America was founded over 200 years ago by immigrants fleeing persecution and searching for a better life for themselves and their families, not unlike immigrants of today fleeing to America for the same reasons. America was officially founded in 1776 when The Declaration of Independence was written and signed by all our founding fathers.
